It’s just about that time of year again. The air is crisp, you’re breaking out the Carhartts, and calving season is right around the corner. Whether you start early, and your first calves are on the ground in December, or you wait for warmer weather in spring it’s always good to be prepared. During calving season there are things you just can’t control, so it’s a good idea to stay on top of what you can. We’ve got some helpful reminders to make sure you’re ready for the season ahead.

Calving Seasonal Tips:

Check the latest version of the UFA Calving Supply checklist to make sure you’re stocked up on supplies. Print the list off and go through what you have on-hand to make sure you have everything you need or shop the list online.

Farm and ranch life is always busy, but with calving season it’s even busier. Now’s the perfect time to check your shelters and maternity pens for any repairs that are needed or maybe it’s time for a new one. Don’t let minor repairs that you’ve been putting off throw a wrench in the works.

Aside from having your shelters south-facing to capture the morning sun, setting up windbreaks, or using portable windbreaks, to help block east and west winds further reduces potential cold stress.

Once you start calving, watch for signs of cold weather stress in your calves. Newborn calves can handle relatively cold temps, but wind or precipitation can quickly affect their body temperature. Even a warmer windy day can be deceptive. If a calf’s body temperature drops below 38°C (100°F) for long, the calf isn’t able to properly regulate its own temperature. Aside from having your shelters south-facing to capture the morning sun, setting up windbreaks, or using portable windbreaks, to help block east and west winds further reduces potential cold stress.

Get your cows on a mineral with adequate calcium and phosphorus, both of which are essential in the final stages of development of the calf and overall health of the cow. Start your cows 60 days out from calving on ProStock 1:1 Cow Calving Mineral, exclusive to UFA Co-operative Limited.

Whether you’re calving out a small herd or a large one, being ready is essential in starting your calves off right. Head into your local Farm & Ranch Supply store for the supplies, supplements, and advice to help your calving season go as smoothly as possible. For more calving resources visit UFA.com/Calving.
